Rotorua: Day One

I write this as I sit on the couch, drinking a cup of tea and almost nodding off.  I’m super tired because I had a terrible sleep last night and we’ve had a really busy day.  But what a day!  Rotorua is officially one of my favourite places to visit in NZ.

Today we left the bach at about 10.00 and managed to find a place for brekkie.  We were stopped by a waiter on Eat Streat (a street dedicated to cafes and restaurants..although we didn’t actually eat there) and told that we actually can’t take dogs into the city centre as there is a ban on dogs!

I thought he was pulling our leg, but he was actually telling the truth.  Poor Pipi.  We took her to a cafe with us anyway.

We went to a cafe called Picnic.  It was very nice.  I got a Croissant with jam and an orange juice.  I also needed a Hot Chocolate, so I got one of those too.  I forgot to take food photos because I was ravenously hungry by that time and needed a big feed.

After that we went for a little walk around and then back to the car.  We drove back to the Lake front and asked a boat company if there were any ferries to Mokoia Island.  Unfortunately they said no, since it is now a wildlife and native bush sanctuary.

We decided to stop at the shops, buy food and then head off to the Blue Lake (Tikitapu).

Have a google of the Maori myth about Tikitapu.  It is quite interesting (I believe it has something to do with a sacred Tiki that a Maori lady through into the blue lake).

Over the hill was the green lake – we just drove past it after hiking through the native bush and forest.

Here are photos from the hike:

And some more:

I had a bit of a play around with the different setting on my camera.

I hope you have all had a great day.

I’ll update about day two tomorrow 🙂
