What a difference there is in fashion shows from then and now.
How Fashion Shows Have Changed Since The 1920s
Women’s fashion has changed a lot over the last 100 years. We first started seeing the big changes in the 20s with the shortening of skirts and the fact that women were able to were togs that showed their legs!
This is showing the bathing suits that women were expected to wear in the 1920s. It looks like they are made of some sort of wool or cotton type material. It’s hard to tell.
Fashion shows have evolved a lot since the 1920s. I think the changes towards what we see now started in the 1960s. Especially with the Mary Quant shows.
In the past, the fashion shows really showed people how the clothes worked.
1940s: (skip to about 9 mins 40s)
In the 50s, there were fashion shows but they were more low key. This video shows women on a catwalk, but they weren’t walking like the models of today. They seem to walk slower and make a bigger effort to show the clothes off:
Mary Quant really revolutionised the way that Fashion Shows operated in the 60s:
With the Mary Quant shows they seemed to be more like a ‘stage affair’ rather than just marching down the catwalk.
It also seemed like dancing down the catwalk got really popular too, as seen in this 1970s clip:
It seems to me that fashion shows before the 80s and 90s were about showing the clothes off. Showing what the clothes did and how they moved. They seemed to move slower as well so that all viewers got a look at the clothes that were being showcased.. The models weren’t marching down the catwalk so fast.
Maybe nowadays people are more wowed by the glitz and glamour a fashion show brings and not actually about the clothes and how they work?
